Walk your dad competition
All students took part in a competition to see who can walk the most. We each kept a chart where our parents would sign for every walk over 20 mins. We added all of these up in our classes to compete for the class that did the most walking. 21 July 2010, 16:43Recipe book

Al Khair School will be hosting a series of events during Fairtrade Fortnight ( February 21st-7th March) as part of a continuing drive to help create awareness about Fair trade in the local community.The week will kick off on Friday 26th February with the school canteen being turned into a café promoting the core values of fair trade through delicious recipes of innovative cakes, tropical smoothies, chocolate fountains, tea, coffee and various snacks all with the assistance of the committed school parent body. Handmade T-shirts with Fairtrade slogans will be available. There will be a number of exciting Fairtrade products for sale along with an informative display of examples of Fairtrade products. Fruit and various Fairtrade products will be supplied by Waitrose and Sainsbury’s. Local schools, colleges and members of the community have also been invited to attend. Money raised from the event will be donated to school children in Ghana during a live conference link up on Friday 5th March with various primary and secondary schools where the children will see directly the impact of Fair trade on the lives of children just like them.
This year’s Fairtrade Fortnight theme is The Big Swap. We will be swapping our usual stuff for Fairtrade stuff. As a school we hope to make a 1000 swaps!
It is also particularly special to the school as it sees the launch of Fairtrade products regularly stocked at the Al Khair school shop.
On Tuesday 2nd March a scrumptious Fairtrade Breakfast will arranged completely by school pupils. From organizing the finances , buying products, creating posters and marketing, the students will be wholly in charge of this challenge. The menu sourced entirely from Fairtrade product includes pancakes, full English breakfast and fresh juices. In order to get the students into the mood of the Fair trade festivities they will be wearing Fairtrade colors. Money raised will go towards buying Fair trade footballs for the school.
Mrs Aisha Chaudhry, Headmistress of Al Khair School has been incredibly supportive of this initiative, she said, “We would like to nurture an environment amongst our pupils where every decision they make is a moral decision. Thus, every transaction they make as consumers should be well informed and ethically fair. This is why we want to support Fair Trade – so that we can educate our children about the consequences their purchasing decisions have for real families.”
A video diary and short movie will made by students of all the events which will be put together and presented at the live conference. Eager students have also put to use their creative talents to pen a Fair trade rap and created original art work.
The week will come to a close with a representative of the Fairtrade Foundation coming to the school to carry out an interactive workshop to help students explore what it is like to be a Fairtrade farmer. The workshop will consist of picture slideshow showing what life is like for poor tea farmers and explaining what Fairtrade via role playing activities. 21 July 2010, 16:35
What we did during fair trade fortnight
During Fair trade fortnight we swapped our usual food for fair trade meals to raise awareness about ethically sourced goods.We hosted workshops, and did a live video link where we spoke to other school children in Ghana.
