Action updated!
Ok, this sounds like a boring, worthy piece of advice. And maybe it is. But to take just one example, someone has calculated that if everyone in the UK saved one staple a day, that would be 120 tonnes of metal saved a year. It's difficult to take staples seriously, to be honest. But if you're in on the SMALL ACTIONS X LOTS OF PEOPLE = BIG CHANGE idea, you'll see the worth.

i did it
i just did it, leave me alone ! 04 April 2010, 20:25I have started a green diary to share my tips and tricks regarding saving the planet from unnecessary waste. Plus, I use cloth bags, turn off appliances, and use a reusable cup for coffee (when I remember) Pass this on! Stop the use of plastic bags!

It's my cousin's birthday soon, and when I asked him what he'd like for his birthdy he said he'd like some flannels for washing, and he's decided to wash using soap because he's sick of all the plastic containers that shower gels come in. I though that was pretty good, both in terms of being a simple present and my cousin's attitude. 24 September 2008, 14:28
Desktop Recycling
My office has recently adopted a 'Desktop Recycling' Regime. We no longer have personal waste bins at our desks, these have been replaced by 5 communal bins: Paper, Plastic, Card, Cans & General Waste.
Post-it notes have also been outlawed! They are no longer available from the stationary cupboard and if employees insist on using them, they will have to buy their own.
What a fantastic way to avoid waste.
The next plan of action is to take away the plastic and paper cups from the communal kitchen in favour of mugs.
It's such a great idea and really uplifting to see a company making good on its environmental policy.

Educating the World...well Surrey at least!!
I am part of a Waste Minimisation Team in Surrey, and we are starting to build up the campaigns that we do around the county. We have a Pre-Sort Campaign coming up, along with a Stamp Out Junk Mail campaign, but the main bulk of our wiork is with schools and teaching them the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle! These are great ways to get the public involved.
I only started the role 3 months ago, but it is already changing the way I conduct my life and it makes me think more about where my products have come from. I am more aware of Fairtrade, Organic and Recycled products. I am inspired by what everyone has been doing on this site and feel that the word should be spread further and wider!!!
And remember, the new 3Rs are better than the old: REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE 29 July 2008, 12:06
Close the Door
Ask the shops you go to to keep their doors closed while they are using heating and airconditioning, so that they stop wasting energy.
If they are reluctant, dont't shop there - go elsewhere.

collecting rubbish
I live in Leigh on sea in Essex, near Prittle Brook. It is charming little waterway, with a variety of trees and bird life, and wild flowers. The only problem is the rubbish and the fly tipping. So since the beginning of the year, I have been walking part of the brook which stretches from the River Roach to Thundersley, and collecting rubbish, wherever practical. So far I have filled 10 black bags. I meet lots of people out on my hour task, some not bothered, but a couple of people have praised me. I dont think I am doing anything unusual. I am doing it because I care about the environment. If everyone were to collect even the rubbish outside their front door, and in their part of the road, it would make a huge difference. What is the saying, 'from little acorns, big trees do grow.'? I love the site by the way. Keep up the good work. 11 March 2008, 13:41
waste a valuable resource
I love waste of all kinds, as I know it can be made into a pourous pubble material that is inert
and can be applied to making many products. You can grow plants in it and have a pot made from it.
Everyone could benefit from it, as waste is such a great investment. Let us stop the stinking thinking and all agree to have a check up from the neck up. From Tiger 27 February 2008, 23:29
I started using soap bars instead of shower gels: less packaging, less waste, less money with the pleasure of a creamy soap sliding on skin.
Also, use cotton wool to remove makeup instead of cotton disks or even worse, wipes that are expensive and so bad for the environment. 14 February 2008, 09:40
Freecycle Groups
I would encourage everyone to join their local "freecycle group", it is an amazing way of recycling your unwanted things and it introduces you brilliant like-minded people.
I use freecycle to enable me to get resources for my tinplate sculptures...I am an designer/maker who uses recycled tin to make small scale wall hangings, mirror frames, picture fames and private commissions all out of unwanted tins and found objects.
I also found out about a course for artists in the midlands advising them on how to set up their own business as designer/makers....a member of freecycle gave me a link site and I discovered this course which is now changing my life for the better!!!
I've just has this site linked to me by another member of freecycle!!!
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK EVERYONE....WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Use a cloth nappy system
Its so easy to do. The new nappy systems have velcro or poppers and keep little bottoms dry. You just give them a rinse and pop them in the wash with everything else. They come out perfectly clean from a cold wash using enviro-friendly detergent, so no environmental downside. Flushable nappy liners can be used to contain most of the solid waste. They save a fortune and you can feel REALLY good about doing your bit. 04 December 2007, 20:18Ditch the wrapping paper
This Christmas, as a family, we're ditching the wrapping paper. Over the last few weeks, I have been collecting all the colourful pages from newspapers and magazines to reuse as wrapping paper ... which will then be recycled! 27 November 2007, 07:41
