always shop local
I buy most of my food in the local market, it is fresher and also the money goes to the right people. 14 August 2010, 21:11shop local

buying bread
Instead of buying bread and cake from the supermarket I went to a non-chain-baker near our flat. He still does proper baking: he mixes the dough himself rather than buying it from a factory. 25 April 2010, 17:14little pharmacy v boots

Do you love to visit the quaint shopping areas in your town on a lovely Spring day? Consider making those wonderful gift shops, coffee shops, wine markets, consignment shops and restaurants a regular stop. Next time you need a quick gift for a special friend, or a great cup of coffee stop by your local business to grab it. Chances are the money you potentially save by frequenting the mall or Starbucks will never equal the experience and friendships you will build by visiting your local business. My favorites at the Marietta Square in Marietta, Georgia are (in no particular order):
* Limelights - fabulous gifts including Lampe Berger, Life is Good, Curly Girl and more.
* Alchemy - great unique jewelry that will have all of your friends asking, 'Where did you get that?'
* Mint Julep - fun and funky consignment shop
* Church Street Market - delicious jellies, jams, sauces, syrups from local entrepreneurs
* Marietta Wine Market - Wow! local wines, imported wines, great cheeses, fun wine glasses & decanturs - wine tastings at least 2 to 3 times per week.
* L Michelle - botique with fun, funky clothing featured in the 'In Style' magazine, Spanx, great shoes and jewelry
* Lizards & Lollipops - This store has the toys that you remember from your childhood like sock monkeys and their newest competitor the Ugly doll!
* Willie Rae's - this edgy restaurant features cajun cuisine with a twist of southwest. The artwork on the walls, much of which is by their very own staff, is desert for the imagination.
* Kiosco - wonderful, delectible Columbian cuisine. Oh my!
* Marietta Pizza - this is THE place to be! Yummy pizza and buzzing with local and out of town guests! Another great place for local art finds....
I could go on and on, but you get the idea! When ever I think about what I need to buy, I consider the Marietta Square first before taking my busuness to 'the mall' or the 'discount store'. Not only are you supporting your local business owners and the local artists that they feature, you are supporting your local economy! 10 April 2010, 13:33
Veggie Boxes
Something I will definitely try to do over the coming weeks after reading these comments. Unfortunately where I live there is only really the take away and the butchers that is independent, everything else around here is owned by some sort of chain and the ones that took over the shop/post office... well with those prices they can whistle. 90p for a lemon? I don't think so. 15 March 2010, 01:33Kivre on Cambrisge Heath road
Lovely shop selling really fresh fruit and veg and loads of yummy Turkish delicacies like olives, hallumi, dates, baklava and most importantly... Efes.Shopping locally is SO much more fun!
Come on, we all dread that weekly supermarket trip - but breaking it up by visiting lots of smaller shops is far more fun. Ok we still visit the supermarket, but our meat comes from a butcher now (there is no greengrocer we can use sadly), and I use the local village shop and post office for loads of things, if I can get it in a small independent shop I'd much rather. You get a conversation, they are always helpful, and they can often get in things that you can't find on the shelf, or advise you where else might sell it. You just don't get that in a supermarket. We did try a veggie box thing once but as someone who likes to plan meals for the week to reduce food waste, I found that not knowing what veggies were coming was more of a hindrance than a help. I am sure one day I will find the solution. 23 December 2009, 10:02shutting down :Z
went 2 plymouth for the weekend and we went to torque for the day and there were so many small business shutting down! it was like ooh look primark! ohh tesco! WHSMITH! why did i spend so much time getting here? i could have just got a 10 min train 2 edinburgh rather then the 9hr journy!
