7 ways to leave the office on time.

• Britons work for nothing for an average of seven hours and six minutes each week. If staff did all of this work at the start of the year, they would not get paid until February 23.
• Workers in north-east England tend to do the most unpaid overtime, an average of seven hours and 42 minutes a week.
• Staff in Scotland clocked up the lowest amount of overtime - six hours and 30 minutes.
• When all workers' unpaid hours were totalled, UK staff were saving their employers £23bn a year.
• One in three partners of people who typically work more than 48 hours a week feel that this has had a negative effect on personal relationships.
• Just over a fifth of people in employment (6 million, or 20.1%) work more than 45 hours a week. This is a high proportion by EU standards though other developed countries such as Australia, Japan and the United States have more long-hours workers than the UK.
• Those working the longest hours in the UK are men aged 30-49 with children and employed in the private sector. Unlike other EU countries, where people working long hours are most likely to be found working in hotels and restaurants, in the UK they are more commonly found in manufacturing. However, full-time managers in the UK, often stereotyped as classic 'workaholics', on average do not work longer hours than their EU counterparts. 
• In survey of those working 48 hours or more per week, more than 1/4 respondents reported some sort of negative impact on health, more than 2/5 respondents reported a negative impact on their relationships, most respondents reported negative effects on their job performance.
• A major review for the Health and Safety Executive concluded that 'There is some evidence that working long hours can lead to stress or mental ill-health, although this is somewhat equivocal. The way an individual thinks about their job and the amount of control they have over their job will mediate this relationship'. So feeling you are in control, but opting to leave work on time occasionally, makes you less likely to suffer stress.
• The main regulations governing working time are the Working Time Regulations. They currently provide employees with the following basic rights and protections:
  • a limit of an average of 48 hours a week over a 17 week period which a worker can be required to work
  • a limit of an average of eight hours work in 24 hours which night workers can work
  • a right to 11 hours rest a day and a right to a day off each week
  • a right to a day off each week
  • a right to an in work rest break if the working day is longer than six hours
  • a right to 28 days paid leave for full-time workers per year.
