That's the sort of thing. Now, practice sounding like you mean it. Because unfortunately in the UK, praising someone else tends to sound like you're really a born-again Canadian whose won the lottery and spent all the money going on motivational courses.

But it's worth persevering, because it makes you feel a little more grrrrrrrr.

    Tell a company when they did well

    People love doing things when they can feel they are doing it well, I know I do, and see others do too :)

    I want to praise you

    There's far too much negativity around, especially in the workplace. I don't understand how criticism and stress is supposed to encourage anyone to give their all to a job, or to life in general. So praise where it's due and deserved is vital. 10 January 2010, 11:07

    I am trying really hard to make sure I praise students for all the great work they do - so far in the first half term I have done really well - I have given stamps, both individual and class, given postcards, certificates, letters and phone calls home and sometimes the best reward of all - a smile :) 28 October 2009, 14:15

    Make your thank you more obvious than theirs


    Many people say thank you and it rolls of the tongue - say it with meaning and it becomes appreciation.
    Moreover, when someone thanks you and they do mean it and they are grateful to you - return that thanks with much more feeling and look them in the eye when you say it.
    You transfer the power of that thanks to a feeling of being needed as well as appreciated to the other person.
    This feeling could be the difference that allows a person to grow with confidence and make their world a happier place.     16 March 2008, 08:32
