• The ratio of the human brain to body weight averages about 1:50, far larger than the average recorded for the other mammals (1:180), 1:220 for birds, 1:1500 for reptiles, and 1:5000 for fishes. It is this average that guides intelligence.
• Having a bigger head could actually make for better IQs. Researchers have proven that the size of a mammal’s head determines its intelligence. Studies conducted among cats and dogs proved that dogs were more intelligent because of their bigger brain size in relation to their body size. This correlation has since been extrapolated to include all mammals including human beings.
• The average human brain weighs in at 2.7 pounds, or 1,200 grams, which is about 2 percent of our body weight.
• Your brain is a thinking organ that learns and grows by interacting with the world through perception and action. Mental stimulation improves brain function and actually protects against cognitive decline, as does physical exercise.
• The human brain is able to continually adapt and rewire itself. Even in old age, it can grow new neurons. Severe mental decline is usually caused by disease, whereas most age-related losses in memory or motor skills simply result from inactivity and a lack of mental exercise and stimulation. In other words, use it or lose it.
• For a long time, it was believed that as we aged, the con­nec­tions in the brain became fixed. Research has shown that in fact the brain never stops chang­ing through learn­ing. Plas­tic­ity IS the capac­ity of the brain to change with learn­ing. Changes asso­ci­ated with learn­ing occur mostly at the level of the con­nec­tions between neu­rons. New con­nec­tions can form and the inter­nal struc­ture of the exist­ing synapses can change.
