US based campaign to bring generations together

Barbara Walmsley, Oxfam's Green Granny starts a new series of tips and ideas for saving money and living better. Here she shows us how to make the most of stale bread, mend clothes and get outdoors.

We've teamed up with innocent to create the Great Recipe Archive, a collection of the nation’s favourite hand-me-down recipes. We’re looking for the oldest and most treasured recipes that have been passed down from parents, grandparents, or a random Great Aunt. It’s all part of our campaign to get different generations talking more, sharing more and coming together more often.

• Here are some favourite family recipes from the pros:

• One of the most famous family recipes is Levi Roots' Reggae-reggae sauce, which came to fame on Dragon's Den in 2007. It's story began in Jamaica in the early 70's when Levi's Grandmother, Miriam Small taught him the magic of cooking and passed on her secret recipe of herbs and spices from one generation to another. For many years Levi and his family made the sauce to sell at the Notting Hill Carnival. Levi made the sauce in his own kitchen but had so many requests for his secret recipe that he was unable to keep up with demand. He decided to try and get an investment on BBC show Dragons' Den to launch the sauce commercially. After the show, Sainsbury's agreed an exclusive distribution deal and within 6 weeks the sauce was on shelf and the demand was incredible. The sauce sold as soon as it was available and for a few weeks Reggae Reggae was out selling the brand leader. Now, the sauce is stocked by all major retailers and extended to a range of new flavours and products.
• On a given day 30.3% of children and adolescents have reported to have eaten fast food. Fast-food consumption was prevalent in both males and females, all racial/ethnic groups, and all regions of the country. 
• Children who eat fast food, compared with those who did not, consume more total fat, carbohydrates, and sugar-sweetened beverages. Children who eat fast food also eat less fiber, milk, fruits, and non-starchy vegetables. 
• The average salt content of a supermarket ready meal is 1.8g per meal. The saltiest meal was Asda's Indian chicken tikka masala with pilau rice at 5g of salt per serving. Britain's Food Standards Agency recommends no more than 6g of salt per day
• An average Indian takeaway contains 23.2g of saturated fat. For women, this is 3.2g more they should eat in a day. The average calorie content of a takeaway is high - 1,338 calories for Indian and 1,436 calories for the same-sized Chinese takeaway.
• A regular meal at McDonald's consists of a Big Mac, large fries, and a large Coca-Cola drink amounting to 1430 calories. A diet of approximately 2000 calories is considered a healthy amount of calories for an entire day (which is different depending on several factors such as age, weight, height, physical activity and gender). Besides the dangers of trans fats, high calories, and low fiber, there is another health risk, food poisoning.
• Fewer than one-third of all children sit down to eat dinner with their parents on any given night
• Children who eat with their families every day, or almost every day, consumed more essential nutrients and lower amounts of fat than children who never or only sometimes ate meals together as a family.
• When children participate regularly in the preparation and cleanup of family meals, they learn valuable skills in cooking and housekeeping that will serve them well when they move out on their own, which means that they will be able to feed themselves healthy foods as adults instead of relying on prepared foods and restaurant take-out.
• Helping in the kitchen also allows children to develop language, reasoning, reading, maths, and science skills.
• Diane Neumark-Sztainer, a researcher at the University of Minnesota, found that children who ate meals together with their families had better vocabularies, and she concluded that the opportunity to use new words during dinner conversation is an important part of language development.
• People who eat dinner with their family on "most days" or "every day" compared with those who ate with their family "never" or on "some days" are 15% less likely to be overweight.
• Teens from families that almost never eat dinner together are 72% more likely to use illegal drugs, cigarettes and alcohol than the average teen and that those who eat dinner with their parents less than 3 times a week are 4 times more likely to smoke cigarettes, 3 times more likely to smoke marijuana and twice as likely to drink as those who eat dinner with their parents at least 6 times a week.
• In the UK, in 2003, around 8,403,365 men aged 16 and over within the English population were overweight. A further 4,302,588 were obese.
  For women, it is estimated that approximately 6,772,757 were overweight and 4,754,080 obese. Approximately, 643,513 boys (aged 2-15) and 613,048 girls (aged 2-15) were overweight in 2003 with a further 746,662 boys and 675,983 girls who were obese.
• In a survey of 1,000 children and 1,370 parents carried out by Sainsbury's for its Active Kids initiative 87% of parents admitted that their children influence the food they buy. Now more and more kids are making the pestering more positive. The survey revealed that 2/3 parents had been asked by their children to buy healthier food. More than half had asked for fruit instead of crisps and chocolate. They've been putting in requests for more fresh food and asking if they can cook healthy meals themselves. Families under pressure from their children are feeling the effect of positive pester power; 57 % of those surveyed are eating healthier food and more than a third are doing more things together as a family.
• As a society we are spending less time with our families, communities, sports teams, or faith groups than we used to: In the early eighties, more than 60% of people then in their thirties were active members of local community organisations.  Twenty five years on across a similar section of society, active membership has dropped to less than 10%. Church attendance across Europe halved over a similar period and political party membership in the UK once nudged 3.5 million but now struggles to reach half a million.
• The benefits of spending time with someone from a different generation include: The transmission of useful life-skills, values, moral codes and social norms, culture, history and identity both up and down the generations. The prevention and reduction of age-based prejudice and discrimination. (ILC-UK 2008)
• The fastest growing age group in the population are those aged 80 years and over who currently constitute 4.5 per cent (2,749,507) of the total population. This age group has increased by over 1.1 million between 1981 and 2007 (1,572,160 to 2,749,507), from 2.8 per cent to 4.5 per cent. It is projected that by 2031, the UK population will include 3 million people aged over-85 compared with 1.2 million in 2006 and around 0.6 million in 1981 
• 1.2 million people over 50 in England (i.e. 7%) face severe‚ multiple exclusion.
• Around half of people over 50 suffer disadvantage with respect to one aspect of their life.
• 1.3 million people over 65 have clinical depression.
• 2.5 million people over 50 have little social or family contact.
• 82% of people agreed that older people can learn from the young.
• 96% of people agreed that young people can learn from older people.
• More than 60% of people agree that outside of their families, a natural part of the ageing process is for older people to become disengaged from younger people.
• 55% of people agree that outside of families, people of different generations generally find it difficult to communicate.
• 83% of 16-24 year olds agree that outside of their families, it becomes harder for older people as they age to relate to younger people.
• 67% of people agreed that old and young people today live in separate worlds.
• 67% of people agreed that relations between old and young in society today are worse than in the past.
• Seven in ten older people are resorting to thrifty skills picked up during the war and post-war years to help them save money and make resources go further during the recession
  - 91 per cent of people over the age of 50 say they budget carefully and spend within their means
  - 87 per cent cook from scratch rather than buying ready-made meals
  - 71 per cent reuse leftover food
  - 54 per cent shop for food in the reduced section or buy reduced food at the end of the day
  - 50 per cent sew or mend items for themselves or others
  - 29 per cent grow their own vegetables.
• Nine in ten older people believe the 'make do and mend' mentality could help younger generations weather today's recession. Younger people share the same belief with 84 per cent of people aged 18-24 thinking they could benefit from skills handed down from tough war and post-war years.
• 'Respect for the aged' day is held in Japan the 3rd Monday of September.
• Grandparents Day is celebrated in England on the first Sunday in October and the first Sunday after Labor Day in the US.
• 'The intergenerational transmission of human capital within families has been found to be a key factor in explaining entreprenueurship... The workplace is a crucial site of intergenerational relations and exchange of human capital... The continual transmission and 'passing down' of human capital between generations is clearly vital for economic growth, and in fact the functioning of society'. (ILC-UK 2008)
