• Scientists say children should be allowed to get dirty. Being too clean can impair the skin's ability to heal. Rates of allergy have tripled in the UK in the last decade. One in three people now has some kind of allergy. Some of this might be that people are better informed. But a lot of it is down to our sanitised environment.

• Doctors recommend walking 10,000 steps a day. This'll burn around 500 calories, depending on your weight and how fast you walk. As you need to burn 3,500 calories to lose 500g (1lb) of body fat, walking 10,000 steps a day will burn 500g (1lb) of body fat a week.
• You don't have to pay an expensive gym membership to get fit. Dancing, cycling, walking and other sports are all great for your health.
• School children pay more attention to academics after they've had recess- an unstructured break in which children are free to play without direction from adults.
• Studies reveal a link between play - particularly symbolic, pretend play- and the development of language skills. A study of British children, aged 1-6 years were asked to perform such symbolic tasks as substituting a teddy bear for an absent object. Children who scored higher on a test of symbolic play had better language skills - both receptive language (what a child understands) and expressive language (the words she speaks).
• Play opportunities improve memory and stimulate the growth of the cerebral cortex. In 1964, Marion Diamond published an exciting paper about brain growth in rats. The neuroscientists conducted a experiment, raising some rats in boring, solitary confinement and others in exciting, toy-filled colonies. When researchers examined the rats' brains, the "enriched" rats had thicker cerebral cortices than did the "impoverished" rats. They were smarter, too - able to find their way through mazes more quickly.
• Psychologists distinguish two types of problem - convergent and divergent. A convergent problem has a single correct solution or answer. A divergent problem yields itself to multiple solutions. Children given training in pretend play showed an increased ability to solve divergent problems. And the converse was true as well: Children trained to solve divergent problems showed increased rates of pretend play.
• Children who had used blocks in more sophisticated ways as preschoolers had better maths grades and took more math courses (including honors' courses) as teenagers.
• Outdoor activities provide valuable alternative, often non-competitive, avenues for achievement, as well as opportunities to develop independence and self-reliance. Through successfully facing up to the challenges which outdoor activities provide, overcoming fears and apprehensions along the way, young people make major strides in confidence, with implications for all aspects of their development.
• Experience in the outdoors provides rich opportunities for personal and social development through carefully structured group work in challenging situations. Trust, care, tolerance and the willingness to give and accept support are all encouraged and anti-social behaviour is challenged. Opportunities are presented to exhibit and develop effective inter-personal behaviour and to work co-operatively and effectively in teams.
• Outdoor recreation introduces young people to a range of worthwhile leisure pursuits which will enrich their future lives, and develops the skills and knowledge essential for safe participation. Outdoor exercise contributes greatly to health and fitness and continuing participation in outdoor pursuits encourages the maintenance of a healthy lifestyle into middle age and beyond.
• Active learning and adventure outdoors introduces young people to the environment in a way which develops understanding appreciation, awe, wonder and respect. It fosters sensitivity to the environment, helps young people to see themselves in a global context and helps to develop citizens with an awareness of the need for sustainable use of the world’s natural resources.
• Eligible trials compared the effects of outdoor exercise initiatives with those conducted indoors and reported at least one physical or mental well-being outcome in adults or children. The study found that most trials showed an improvement in mental well-being: compared with exercising indoors, exercising in natural environments was associated with greater feelings of revitalisation, increased energy and positive engagement, together with decreases in tension, confusion, anger and depression. Participants also reported greater enjoyment and satisfaction with outdoor activity and stated that they were more likely to repeat the activity at a later date.
